Public Engagement

As community liaison for History 272: The Modern Civil Rights Movement, I coordinate class activities with community partners including the group, Washtenaw (County) Faces Race. In collaboration with these groups, my students researched the state of African American history in K-12 education, bolstering efforts by Michigan State lawmakers to place African American history on the statewide curriculum.

The exhibit "From Swing to Hip Hop: A Photographic History of Musical Performance at the University of Michigan" documented the various uses and meanings of music on campus and in Ann Arbor over the past century. Created in collaboration with Gregory Parker and Joshua Mound as part of the University's Bicentennial commemorations, the exhibit ran at the Michigan League from March 24--April 30, 2017
